Grade 8 Social Studies is an inquiry-based interdisciplinary subject that draws upon the content areas of Civics and History. This course fosters students’ understanding of, and involvement in, practical and ethical issues that face the local community and the wider world. Students develop their inquiry, research, and communication skills, while also learning how to take meaningful action in order to impact change.
Students will:
- Investigate historic, civic, and cultural factors that shape our world
- Develop inquiry and ethical research skills
- Nurture critical thinking and collaborative problem solving skills
- Embrace the importance of civic responsibility and service
- Apply and transfer learning to their own lives and the lives of those around them
Some sample enduring understandings which students will explore:
- Governments are structured to achieve the society’s values.
- Communities require rules, laws and government to function.
- Nothing is simple in history - everything is connected.
- History is founded upon the relationship between individual choices and their impact on society.
