Sinfonia Strings

Full Year

Building upon foundational string techniques and musical concepts, Sinfonia String Orchestra will explore new key signatures and finger patterns, further develop music literacy skills, and explore musical expression through bow strokes, articulations, and dynamic contrasts. When repeating this course in 8th grade, student musicians will have opportunities for leadership and more rigorous extensions on course concepts, in preparation for the HS music program. Additionally, students may choose to participate in external music festivals such as the HKSMSA Music Festival and the AMIS Online Solo/Ensemble Festival.

Students will:

  • Develop individual performance skills and instrumental technique
  • Develop ensemble skills and understanding of their role in an ensemble setting
  • Develop music literacy skills
  • Learn to perform a variety of easy/intermediate string orchestra repertoire
  • Develop home practice routines and learn how to apply effective practice strategies
  • Perform for their peers and the school community
  • Attend occasional after-school rehearsals and concerts

Learning will be guided by the following questions:

  • How does individual practice contribute to an ensemble’s performance?
  • What is effective practice?
  • How do musicians improve the quality of their performance?
  • How do ensemble musicians collaborate through rehearsal and performance?
  • How do performers select repertoire?
  • How do musicians interpret the musical intentions of a composer?
  • How do students respond to and interact with a conductor?

Pre-requisites/notes: Basic proficiency on one’s instrument (generally one to two years of experience) equivalent to the successful completion of Beginning Strings 6, Sinfonia Strings 6, or by special permission of the strings teachers.
