Full year
Language Arts 6 focuses on developing students’ reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Students learn to consider others’ perspectives when communicating ideas and to support their thinking with sufficient evidence or details. They are exposed to a variety of genres including narrative and informational (explanatory) texts. Grammar and language awareness lessons are embedded within units. The course is designed to allow students to explore and apply a variety of strategies. Lessons are structured for students to collaborate by working with partners and small groups. There are also opportunities for students to apply strategies independently. The teacher provides guidance by sharing strategies and presenting various texts for analysis.
Students will:
- Read regularly and widely
- Respond and reflect insightfully to a range of texts
- Develop and apply narrative and non-narrative writing strategies
- Develop skills to communicate effectively
Some sample questions students will explore:
- What are the habits of effective readers and writers?
- Why is it important for people to share narratives about their experiences?
- What am I willing to take a stand on?
- How can our own lives be viewed as a hero's journey?
