Full Year
Students with at least one year of experience playing a string instrument have the opportunity to continue their musical studies through Sinfonia String Orchestra. Building upon the foundational concepts, this course will explore new key signatures and finger patterns, further develop music literacy skills, and explore musical expression through bow strokes, articulations, and dynamic contrasts. Students will have the opportunity to create their own music by arranging existing musical works, and to interpret composers’ intentions through performance. Additionally, students may choose to participate in external music festivals such as the HKSMSA Music Festival and the AMIS Online Solo/Ensemble Festival.
Students will:
- Develop individual performance skills and instrumental technique
- Develop ensemble skills and understanding of their role in an ensemble setting
- Learn to perform a variety of easy/intermediate string orchestra repertoire
- Develop home practice routines and learn how to apply effective practice strategies
- Perform for their peers and the school community
- Attend occasional after-school rehearsals and concerts
Some sample questions the students will explore during this course:
- What is the difference between solo playing and ensemble playing?
- How does individual preparation contribute to an ensemble?
- How do musicians interpret the musical intentions of a composer?
- How does individual practice contribute to an ensemble’s performance?
- What is effective practice?
Pre-requisites/notes: Basic proficiency on one’s instrument (generally one to two years of experience) equivalent to the successful completion of Beginning Strings, and/or Upper Primary Strings ASA, and/or permission of the strings teachers, and/or a performance audition.
