Beginning Strings 6

Full Year

Have you always wanted to learn the violin, viola, cello or double bass?  Sign up for beginning strings! This class is for students with no prior experience in string classes or lessons.  The course will start with the very basics of string instrumental technique, laying a strong foundation for more advanced study in the coming years.  Students will play music of various styles and genres and will learn how to play individually and in a group. They will have the opportunity to perform in concerts for their peers and the school community. 

Students will:

  • Work on fundamentals of string technique, posture, and sound production
  • Be introduced to beginner’s repertoire in various styles and genres
  • Develop music literacy skills
  • Experience playing music as an individual and in an ensemble setting
  • Perform for their peers and the school community
  • Attend occasional after-school rehearsals and concerts 

Some sample questions the students will explore during this course:

  • How does a string instrument produce sound?
  • How can I achieve great left hand technique?
  • How can I use the bow to create a beautiful sound?
  • What is good ensemble playing?
  • What is effective practice? 

Pre-requisites/notes: No prior experience playing an instrument is required. Students who are interested in beginning strings will meet individually to determine the best fit for instrument selection and size.
