Classical Strings

Full Year

Classical String Orchestra offers the opportunity for student musicians to refine their musical studies through ensemble performance. This course will emphasize ensemble skills, leadership, and collaboration over individual technical development, to prepare student musicians for the HS music program. Consistent at-home practice is necessary for success in Classical Strings. Additionally, students may choose to participate in external music festivals such as the HKSMSA Music Festival, the AMIS Online Solo/Ensemble Festival, and prepare an audition for the AMIS Asian Honor Orchestra.

Students will:

  • Develop ensemble skills and understanding of their role in an ensemble setting
  • Learn to perform a variety of intermediate/advanced string orchestra repertoire
  • Collaborate with peers to improve their performance
  • Learn how to apply effective practice and rehearsal strategies
  • Perform for their peers and the school community
  • Attend occasional after-school rehearsals and concerts

Learning will be guided by the following questions:

  • How does individual practice contribute to an ensemble’s performance?
  • What is effective practice?
  • How do musicians improve the quality of their performance?
  • How do ensemble musicians collaborate through rehearsal and performance?
  • How do performers select repertoire?
  • How do musicians interpret the musical intentions of a composer?
  • How does technique inform musical expression?
  • How do students respond to and interact with a conductor?

Pre-requisites/notes: Intermediate/advanced proficiency on one’s instrument (usually at least 3 years of experience), and/or successful completion of Classical Strings 6, and/or a performance audition and the recommendation of the strings teachers.
